EMDR
Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is a structured, evidence-based therapy that helps people heal from trauma, distressing memories, and overwhelming emotions. Unlike traditional talk therapies, EMDR uses guided eye movements or other forms of bilateral stimulation (such as tapping or sounds) to help the brain reprocess and release memories that are “stuck.”
Traumatic or painful experiences can sometimes remain unprocessed, leaving you triggered long after the event has passed. EMDR helps unlock and reprocess these memories, reducing their emotional charge so they no longer control your thoughts, feelings, or behaviours.
You remain fully in control throughout the process, EMDR does not require you to retell every detail of your trauma. Instead, it provides a safe and structured pathway for your brain to heal naturally, restoring balance and clarity.
How EMDR Works & Its Benefits
During an EMDR session, I will work with you to identify a specific memory or trigger associated with your phobia or distress. Once identified, you will be guided to focus on that memory while simultaneously engaging in bilateral stimulation. This is typically achieved through guided eye movements, but can also use auditory tones or tactile taps. This stimulation mimics the natural memory processing that occurs during REM sleep, helping your brain process the memory more effectively.
EMDR process:
-
We begin by exploring your background, building trust, and equipping you with grounding tools to ensure you feel safe and supported throughout the process.
-
Together, we identify specific memories, triggers, or beliefs that continue to affect you in your daily life.
-
Using eye movements, tapping, or sounds, the brain is guided to reprocess these memories, reducing their emotional intensity.
-
The distress linked to difficult experiences begins to lessen, allowing you to recall the memory without being overwhelmed.
-
The brain naturally integrates healthier, more balanced beliefs, replacing negative self-perceptions with positive ones
-
Each session ends with grounding techniques to leave you calm and stable, followed by regular progress reviews to ensure your goals are being met
Benefits you may experience:
-
Many clients notice a reduction in distressing reactions after just a few sessions, helping you feel calmer and more in control sooner.
-
Learn to manage the physical and emotional responses to triggers, allowing you to approach situations that once felt overwhelming with confidence.
-
Safely process past experiences, reducing the emotional intensity of flashbacks, nightmares, or intrusive thoughts.
-
Gain tools to respond to challenges with clarity and balance instead of feeling stuck or overwhelmed.
-
Transform self-critical or restrictive thoughts into healthier, empowering perspectives, and diminish the impact of phobias.
-
By reprocessing difficult memories, EMDR helps you regain control over your emotions and thoughts, fostering long-term confidence and inner strength.
